Prof Garry David Phillips (1936 – 2016)

The College regretfully informs the Fellows and Members of the death of Prof Garry David Phillips. Prof Phillips is an Honorary Fellow of our College who had made significant contribution to our College as well as our anaesthetic community. Prof Phillips passed away on 25th July 2016 at the age of 79 after fighting against motor neuron disease for a long time. The following is the obituary and thank Dr Chi-tim Hung, the Past President of the College for writing it.

Revised Vocational Training Guide for Training in Intensive Care Medicine

The Board of Intensive Care has recently reviewed the Vocational Training Guide (VTG) for training in Intensive Care Medicine. The VTG has been endorsed by the College’s council and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Education Committee with the effective date of 1 July 2017. The VTG can be found here.

According to clause 1.6.3, Trainees who start their training on 1 July 2017 or after, they are required to complete the Exposure to Anaesthetic Safety and Emergencies (EASE) course. For details, please refer to the VTG for training in Intensive Care Medicine.

Recruitment of Course Instructors for Enhancing Safety in Sedation Courses

We are now recruiting instructors for Enhancing Safety in Sedation courses – for doctors and for nurses (doctor-instructors). If you are interested in teaching and sharing their knowledge and experience in safe sedation to doctors and nurses from other specialties, please contact the Clinical and Simulation Training Centre at simulation@hkca.edu.hk.
Applicants should have
1. relevant knowledge and experience in clinical procedural sedation in their specialty
2. completed an approved simulation instructor training course

Successful applicants will need to observe a full course followed by teaching in two courses as Assistant Instructor before becoming a Full instructor.

CEO Retirement

Mr Daniel Tso, has retired as CEO of the College after his nearly 18 years of service. The College wishes him all the best. Dr Siu-lun Tsui has written a poem to commemorate Mr Tso’s retirement. Thank Dr Tsui for sharing it with us.

 

 

 

 

Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament

The College offers the congratulations to the basketball team of the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists who won the second runner-up of the Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament on 30 July 2016. The photos of the match are now available on College’s website - Members’ Area.

 

 

 

Acute Pain Management: Scientific Evidence

The fourth edition of the acute pain guidelines has been published by ANZCA Faculty of Pain Medicine and is available on ANZCA website. The publication provides access to the most up-to-date science and practice on acute pain management. Of equal importance, there is much new information about effective management of acute pain as a preventive strategy to reduce the risk of progression from acute to chronic pain.
